Cartagena is a port city on Spain’s southeastern Mediterranean coast, in the Region of Murcia, where a sheltered harbor is surrounded by hills and historic neighborhoods. Its strategic position has made it an important maritime center for successive civilizations, leaving an unusually rich archaeological and architectural landscape. The modern city combines a busy waterfront with a compact historic center, where Roman remains stand alongside military buildings and modernist architecture. The harbor also provides a natural setting for exploring Cartagena’s maritime identity, which remains closely connected to naval activity, fishing, and trade.

Cartagena’s cultural heritage includes Punic, Roman, medieval, and modern influences. The Roman Theatre is one of the city’s principal archaeological sites, while the Roman Forum, Casa de la Fortuna, and Punic Wall reveal different aspects of ancient Cartagena. The National Museum of Underwater Archaeology explores the region’s long relationship with the sea and displays artifacts recovered from underwater sites. Other notable landmarks include the Castillo de la Concepción, the Cathedral of Santa María la Vieja, and the Palacio Consistorial, an ornate modernist building near the harbor. Local festivals also draw on the city’s Punic and Roman heritage.

The coastline around Cartagena includes beaches, rocky coves, and protected natural areas, particularly along the rugged Cabo Tiñoso and the Mar Menor. Within the city, the harbor promenade leads past museums and maritime landmarks, including the monument to Isaac Peral and his pioneering submarine design. The nearby Cala Cortina provides a sheltered beach backed by steep hills, while the coastal area around Portús offers another setting for swimming and walking. Offshore waters support marine habitats that have made the Cartagena coast an important area for diving, with underwater archaeological sites adding another dimension to its maritime landscape.

Cartagena’s cuisine reflects both its Mediterranean setting and the agricultural traditions of Murcia. Seafood and fish are central to local cooking, while arroz caldero, a rice dish traditionally prepared with fish and served with garlic-based sauce, is strongly associated with the coast of the Mar Menor. Other regional specialties include michirones, a dish made with dried broad beans, and the cantonal salad, which combines vegetables with salted or smoked fish. Cartagena is also known for café asiático, a coffee prepared with condensed milk, Licor 43, cinnamon, lemon peel, and coffee beans, traditionally served in a distinctive glass.
